LEADED LIGHTS, LEAD-LIGHTS AND TRADITIONAL LEADED GLASS

We use traditional materials and techniques to restore and repair the leaded glass windows of the past to ensure that they will continue to function as a fully waterproof and windproof element of the architecture. Often original leaded lights will have loose and rattling glass, cracked solder joints and/or very fragile lead calmes (this is the network or matrix of lead strips that holds the different pieces of glass together). As age weakens the lead and solder the whole window can fall apart once lead deterioration reaches a critical stage of decay. We can restore these windows to give you in excess of a further 100 years of life.

SYMPATHETIC RESTORATION OF LEADED GLASS WINDOWS

Cracked or broken glass can be matched from our extensive range of coloured and textured glass sheet. For new leaded lights we can use glass that harmonises with the style of window, whether Victorian or Edwardian or Art Nouveau or Art Deco we can supply an appropriate design and glass to match period detail. The window will be designed for strength as well as beauty and will include strengthening bars fastened to the lead cames to provide inherent stability of the window within the frame or masonry.

FRAMES AND MASONRY FOR LEADED LIGHTS

Often the old external strengthening bars are mild steel and are rusting inside the stonework, then expanding and cracking the masonry and the leaded window glass. We can replace the original mild steel or iron bars with stainless steel or add phosphor bronze tips to ensure that no future damage will occur either to the lead light windows or to the masonry or frames.

STAINED GLASS RESTORATION

Our restoration team uses the same techniques that have been used for centuries in the making and conservation of stained and leaded windows and Sunrise Stained Glass has gained a high reputation from the many large and successful restoration projects that it has been involved with, in churches and cathedrals across the UK.

LEADED LIGHT WINDOW PROTECTION

Inevitably damage to leaded lights and stained glass windows can occur from various means over the many years that a window is in place and conservation projects also call for the protection of historic stained glass and leaded glass windows. The usual method of protection of ecclesiastical glass windows is with wire mesh grilles and polycarbonate sheeting, and the studio is happy to provide quotations for these methods on application. Please see our ‘Find Us’ information page for contact details and we are happy to provide a quotation for leaded light and stained glass protection.
